Walther PPK/S

I picked up a little something for my birthday while in Prescott last week: a Walther PPK/S in 9mm kurz (380). I’ve wanted one of these for years and was lucky enough to find one that was imported, not some Smith & Wesson abortion.

This PPK/S was built in Ulm, "West" Germany sometime between 1968 and 1979 and imported by Interarms before they acquired the license to build them here. It features German markings and is stamped as "9mm kurz". In fact, the only English markings on it are "Made in W. Germany" and the Interarms import stamp.

It came with nothing but a magazine. Fortunately, the manual is available for download from Walther. Surprisingly, the gun was beautifully clean inside and out and the finish has only been slightly worn. Shooting it is a pleasure. It kicks a bit more than one might expect for a .380 thanks to the blowback design (one piece frame and barrel), but I find I much prefer the heft of an all-steel construction over modern polymer silliness.

Future plans for it are a new set of springs to reduce the overwhelming 12.5 pound trigger pull when firing double-action, and I would like to find a nice set of wood grips. I particularly like these ones…

Forget AWB, We’re Headed for an All-Firearms Ban

…This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. – U.S. Constitution, Article VI

Just when it seemed things were starting to look up in the battle between the individual State’s Constitutional rights and unchecked FEDGOD expansion, there is a new plan in the works. Congress may be a part of that great bloated machine, and it has certainly made it’s contribution towards further violations of the afore-mentioned sacred document, but it turns out they just aren’t moving fast enough for the guys upstairs.

President Obama is visiting Mexico today, during which he is continuing his push for the U.S. to ratify the Clinton-era Inter-American Arms Treaty, a treaty which is essentially a way of getting around what is left of the checks & balances of our government to establish new controls over our citizens right to keep and bear – without any sort of oversight. Of course, Mr. Obama prefers you think otherwise…

But Obama indicated that while he favors reinstating the U.S. ban on assault weapons, which Congress allowed to expire five years ago, the move would face too much political opposition to happen soon. He said better enforcing existing laws and increasing U.S. vigilance on the border to prevent arms smuggling, as his administration has begun to do, would have a more immediate effect on stopping U.S.-made weapons from reaching Mexico’s cartels.

Yes, that’s right. Mr. Obama is being patient because he knows America isn’t ready for AWB 2, or is he?

…we can’t wait for whatever happens in the congress on something as clearly controversial as an assault weapons ban reinstatement…

The truth comes out, I expect to see the blatant misuse of emergency executive powers in the near future. It isn’t clear if this was an accidental slip by our new DHS head, Its Pat, or if they are simply arrogant enough to think it doesn’t matter anymore. The fact remains, this treaty is far worse than any version of the Assault Weapons Ban ever has been.

The treaty also calls for countries to adopt strict licensing requirements, mark firearms when they are made and imported to make them easier to trace, and establish a cooperative process for sharing information between national law enforcement agencies investigating arms smuggling.

So basically without FEDGOD permission (a new federal firearms license) you would not be able to purchase or manufacture firearms. While bad, we knew that was coming soon. What the report doesn’t say is that the treaty would actually require a license for any of the following activities: purchasing or manufacturing firearms, purchasing or manufacturing (including reloading) ammunition, and purchasing or manufacturing firearm related materials (including any and all accessories).

Digging a little deeper into the treaty’s text we find the definitions are even more frightening. A firearm is defined as “any barreled weapon which will or is designed to or may be readily converted to expel a bullet or projectile by the action of an explosive…or any other weapon or destructive device.” Ammunition is considered to be “the complete round or its components, including cartridge cases, primers, propellant powder, bullets, or projectiles that are used in any firearm.” And yes, you read right, “other related materials” is defined as any component, part, or replacement part of a firearm or accessory which can be attached to a firearm!

It will be interesting to see who qualifies for this new federal firearms license, or should I say licenses (one for firearms, one for ammo, one for reloading, one for parts/accessories…). It also kind of makes you wonder about the shortages created by panic-buying of guns and ammo at a time when gun control laws, at a glance, seem to be loosening. The tinfoil hat says the timing was all part of the plan…

The ammo shelves were equally devoid of any useful calibers…

Still think Obama isn’t after your guns?

The Obama Forum

They have an entire sub-forum dedicated to it at the grass-roots The Obama Forum, and they aren’t planning to stop there. Freedom of thought, religion, speech, press, privacy and many others are considered “evil” that must be “purged” from American soil. With open-minded and loving posts like “Homeless people are disgusting and have no right to self-defense”, “Music that must be banned!!”, “List enemy license plates here”, and “Would you kill for Obama?” it is no wonder hate groups like the NRA and the Christian church are their targets…

If you are still in the dark, or still believe that Obama supporters are, for the most part, just naive youth following the next shiny object I suggest you stop by this “Forum for Supporters of Obama.” At the very least check out who their sponsors are, what sub-forums they have, and what they are all about – that should be enough to wake anyone up…

Change

No, not the Hope & Change kind of change. I’ve re-organized a few things around here and added a couple sections. Since BAT*21 is now up and running, I’ve copied all the Gear & Skills posts (and all the blade-related Guns & Knives posts) over to that new site. The old posts will still be available here, but I will be posting any future gear reviews I do as a part of that project. Since that leaves nothing here from those topics but firearms, I’ve created a new section to replace Guns & Knives called… Firearms.

Since moving to the middle of nowhere, I’ve also been doing quite a bit of maintenance and modification to my Discovery on my own so I added a section called Land Rover for any useful tidbits I find working on that project, and any post-worthy off road trips.

fotikus is also up and running now, though still under construction. I’ve only had time to put a hundred or so photos up there, but I expect to have the rest done before the end of the month. Pictures on fotikus are free for non-commercial use, or $25 each for commercial customers.

New Year’s Hunting

We headed back home for New Year’s week for some relaxation and hunting. The coyotes were too smart, the rabbits too fast, and the quail too few… its a good thing we had fried chicken waiting for us.

Armed and Benevolent?

I’ve been asked many times why we have guns. The question varies from the “guns are bad” argument of fear and disbelief to “Well, if you’re just going to turn them in anyhow why bother” confusion. To the first the obvious answer is guns are not bad, people are, and anyone who doesn’t understand that is either ignorant or brainwashed.

To the second, yes it is true that when guns are inevitably outlawed and FEDGOD comes to take mine they can have them. While I appreciate what the Second Amendment has tried to do for the last 200 years or so, the fact remains we have a God-given right to self-defense, not guns or fair odds. Furthermore, unless you are looking for a suicide-by-cop exit to this life, the concept of a second revolution by arms in this day and age is just plain naive. During the revolution we had the benefit of an armed majority and a lack of technological advancement at the time. Gun owners are not the majority today, and the majority of them would not stand up and fight. Even if the majority of the population were somehow convinced to fight for our freedoms, most Americans alive today lack the stomach for the long and messy ordeal we would be facing. No, if we cannot win back our freedom by legal means, within the system, by majority-rule then there is no longer any point. This is especially true if you know and believe how this all ends.

Regardless, the vast majority have been conditioned to truly believe that they are entitled to a lifetime of contentment, and that handing over the last of our freedoms to a socialist/communist (communitarian) government in exchange for that contentment is a good idea. The sheeple are all happily lined up for the slaughter, and there is no way to change their minds this go-round. It took nearly a century to get to this point, it will take another to undo it (and that’s once the task is started).

So, why do I continue to purchase, posses and operate firearms? Here’s my list:

  • When seconds count, the police are just minutes away
  • In the rural area I live, they are even further
  • In the even more remote areas I play, it could be days
  • When I do stay in the city: during times of civil unrest or natural disaster, a gun can deter would-be criminals from raping, burning and pillaging
  • Most predatory wildlife can be scared off by the sound of a gunshot, and those that aren’t can be stopped with a gunshot. This is valuable protection when you are hiking in the wilderness without the benefit of a vehicle for protection
  • If supply lines are disrupted, hunting can help feed friends and family
  • Like it or not, guns are a part of history (and I like antiques, so I collect)
  • Shooting is safe fun, and a great stress reliever

Wiley X: JP-2p

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Pros:
ANSI Z87.1-2003, polarized, “goggle mode” with snap-in facial cavity seal, durable

Cons:
Might not fit some persons

The Bottom Line:
This is a great set of protective eyewear, if they fit. Check them out in person first to find a Wiley-X model that fits the shape of your face perfectly before buying, otherwise “goggle mode” might not work.

I picked up a set of JP-2p sunglasses by Wiley X today, and I’m pretty happy. It’s certainly nice to be looking at the world through polarized lenses once more, calling them sunglasses is an understatement though (which I knew going into it). With lens and frame meeting ANSI Z87.1-2003 high velocity standards, these make great eye protection for outdoor shooting. Adding to this utility, an attachable facial cavity seal and head strap transform these sunglasses into tactical goggles in a matter of seconds. I’m looking forward to testing this feature out the next time I am in the desert and hit a dust storm.

I was surprised to find the glasses slightly more comfortable in “goggle mode” than “sunglass mode”. As to accessories, I recommend purchasing either the draw-string pouch or the hard case, as the included soft case is too big to be useful and doesn’t close well.

One note of caution: installing and removing the accessories takes a bit of effort. In fact, a few times getting the facial cavity seal removed I was quite concerned about breaking the frame, and the included T-peg strap is much the same. The general rule with these glasses is just the opposite of the norm it would seem: use all necessary force, they wont break.

Since pictures of this product seem to be severly lacking (even at the manufacturer’s site), I’ve been a bit more thorough this time around to be sure and cover all the details.
