Just a quick drive to check conditions for crossing Bristol Dry Lake on this coming weekend’s trip. Perfect weather, and the lake is bone dry.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
March 25th, 2010, 22:15 hoursWe took a ride up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway tonight. While the desert below was very hazy from the high winds, the views were still impressive.
The food at the “fine dining” restaurant was absolutely horrible, if you go, go casual and dine in the cafeteria. The drinks at the bar were also watered down. I don’t mean weak, I mean watered down. We ordered a Bailey’s on the rocks just to be sure, it was half water. The ride was fun, but overpriced at $22.50 per person. It might be worth it for the day or so it takes off of the hike up to San Jacinto Peak if you are backpacking, or as a through-hike from Idyllwild, but I would not do it again just for the sake of visiting Mountain Station.
Old Pics: Anza-Borrego Edition
January 11th, 2010, 18:56 hoursOAUSA BorregoFest 2009
October 27th, 2009, 15:10 hoursWe spent a long weekend with OAUSA out in Anza-Borrego. I have enjoyed our solo explorations (and will continue to), but it is great to finally meet a group of people with similar feelings about vehicles, camping, land use and laws, and backcountry exploration in general.
Details on OAUSA and BorregoFest are here, and the rest of our pictures are here.
Hiking Nolina Peak
January 17th, 2009, 23:36 hoursAbout a 9 mile hike from our front door in the valley below up to 360-degree views of Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. The entire Nolina Peak area was recently bought up by The Mojave Desert Land Trust and is scheduled to be turned over to Joshua Tree NP in the near future.
